Tinnitus Treatment

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus (literally “ringing” in Latin) is characterized by ringing, buzzing, or other noises that originate in the ear or the head, and can cause discomfort and stress.
Although this condition is usually not dangerous, it can be a symptom of another health problem or underlying condition. Tinnitus can cause many stressful side effects, including fatigue, problems sleeping, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, depression, anxiety, and irritability. And so, while it’s not necessarily serious, tinnitus can be quite debilitating.

Causes & Treatments

Tinnitus affects between 15% – 20% of people and is most common in older adults.  There are over 50 million people in North America suffering from this condition.

Tinnitus is most commonly described as a ringing in your ears, but the “sound” isn’t caused by an external noise. There are different symptoms for tinnitus, but the most common include hearing a phantom sound like ringing, buzzing, whooshing, hissing, clicking, or even music.

Treatments

In order to determine the best treatment for tinnitus, it is important to understand its symptoms and causes. In some cases, tinnitus can be resolved easily if the cause is temporary, such as an infection or a buildup of earwax. However, in other cases where the cause is unknown and/or tinnitus may be permanent, an audiologist can assess the severity of the tinnitus, symptoms, and then recommend/implement an appropriate solution or course of treatment.

Causes

Causes include: exposure to loud noise, certain medications, ear infection, trauma to the ear or brain, Meniere’s disease, and vascular disorders. Tinnitus may be caused by one or more of these conditions. The most common cause of tinnitus, accounting for about 90% of cases, is hearing loss. Many people haven’t yet realized that they present with noise-induced or age-related hearing loss, and tinnitus is the first clue.

In terms of treatment, there are several forms and options available to the person who suffers from tinnitus. Some may include use of amplification devices (hearing aids) and/or masking instruments that can enrich auditory input and emit white noise. There are also therapies available that are designed to provide relief to individuals who find the tinnitus debilitating and adversely affecting everyday function. While tinnitus treatments may not make the tinnitus disappear completely, they are proven to effectively make tinnitus less noticeable, thus helping the individual cope, and life become less stressful.
