Meet Ellen Armeniakos - 30 Years of Helping People Hear in London, Ontario

For Ellen Armeniakos, a career in hearing care did not begin with a job advertisement or a carefully mapped-out plan.

It began with her grandmother.

Ellen’s grandmother spoke very little English, so when she attended hearing appointments, Ellen went with her. She became the bridge between her grandmother and the hearing care professional, helping her understand the recommendations and decisions being made.

Those appointments gave Ellen an early glimpse into the difference that better hearing can make. She saw how important it was for someone to feel understood, informed and included in their own care. She also saw how hearing care could reconnect a person with the people and world around them.

“I was the bridge between her audiologist and the appointment,” Ellen recalls. “It showed me that we can make such an incredible difference in someone’s life when we can help them hear better and understand what’s going on.”

That experience ultimately guided her into the profession.

A Career That Began in 1997

Ellen has been helping people with their hearing since 1997.

Across almost three decades, she has experienced hearing care from many different perspectives. Her career began in a medical environment, working in a large clinic alongside an otologist. It gave Ellen a strong clinical foundation and an early understanding of the complexity of hearing healthcare.

From there, she moved into the hospital system, working alongside ear, nose and throat specialists. Part of that role involved visiting smaller community hospitals and bringing specialist hearing care to people who may otherwise have struggled to access it.

For Ellen, it was about making sure that geography or circumstance did not prevent someone from receiving the support they needed.

“If we didn’t go, they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see that specialist,” she explains.

Later, Ellen moved into the corporate side of hearing care, working with some of the largest companies in the industry. Each stage brought valuable experience and a deeper understanding of how hearing healthcare is delivered.

After years spent across medical, hospital and corporate environments, however, Ellen found herself drawn back to something more personal: community-based care.

Returning to the Heart of Hearing Care

Joining Beck Hearing Aid Centre marked an important new chapter in Ellen’s career.

Although it was a significant change, she describes it as the right one. At Beck Hearing, Ellen has returned to what first inspired her nearly 30 years ago: helping individual people feel heard, understood and supported.

“It has been so rewarding getting back to the grassroots and helping people in our community,” she says.

One of the most meaningful parts of her role is Beck Hearing’s work through community health clinics. These clinics bring hearing care to people who may not be able to travel easily or access services through traditional routes.

For Ellen, this reflects a principle that has followed her throughout her career: great hearing care should be available to the people who need it, including those who might otherwise be overlooked.

She has also found a shared sense of purpose at Beck Hearing. The company’s owner has hearing loss herself and personally understands how important it is to find the right solution.

That lived experience shapes the organization’s approach. Decisions are guided not simply by systems or targets, but by what will genuinely help the person sitting in front of the team.

“Knowing that the person you’re working for cares about the actual end user is amazing,” Ellen says.

Care Built Around the Individual

Ellen believes one of Beck Hearing’s greatest strengths is its personalized approach.

No two people experience hearing loss in exactly the same way. Their lifestyles, priorities, challenges and goals are different, so their care should not be forced into a standard package.

At Beck Hearing, the team takes the time to understand what each person needs and builds a treatment plan around them.

For one person, that may involve hearing technology and accessories that make conversations, television or phone calls easier. For somebody else, wax removal may be an important part of their care. Others may need additional support, adjustments or education.

The aim is not to place people into boxes. It is to look at the complete picture and tailor the experience accordingly.

“We can focus on individual people and put together a treatment plan that is giving you exactly what you need,” Ellen explains.

“Managing Isn’t Living”

Throughout her career, Ellen has seen how common it is for people to wait years before seeking help with their hearing.

People often become very good at coping. They ask others to repeat themselves, turn up the television, avoid noisy environments or rely on family members to fill in the gaps. Over time, those workarounds can begin to feel normal.

But Ellen believes there is an important difference between coping with hearing difficulties and fully participating in life.

“People figure out ways to manage, but managing isn’t living,” she says.

Better hearing is not only about hearing more sounds. It is about being present for the moments that matter. It means hearing your grandchildren clearly, enjoying conversations with your spouse, following your favourite television programmes, listening to music and feeling comfortable at social events.

It allows people to remain involved rather than gradually retreating from situations that have become difficult or tiring.

That is why Ellen encourages people not to wait until hearing loss has taken more from their quality of life.

“Why would you isolate yourself if you could be part of all the action?” she asks.

Still Rewarded by Every Transformation

Technology, clinical practices and the hearing care industry have changed enormously since Ellen began her career in 1997.

What has not changed is the reason she continues to do the work.

After almost 30 years, Ellen still finds it rewarding to watch a person change when they can hear better. Every clearer conversation and renewed connection is a reminder of the impact that first inspired her while attending appointments with her grandmother.

Today, as a Hearing Instrument Specialist at Beck Hearing Aid Centre in London, Ontario, Ellen combines decades of experience with a deeply personal understanding of what good hearing care should feel like.

It should be accessible. It should be individualized. Above all, it should help people reconnect with the lives they want to live.

For Ellen, that has always been the real purpose of hearing care. Nearly 30 years later, it remains the reason she is still so passionate about helping people hear.
